Details

Mt. Whitney is the highest summit in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet.  Join us for a 50-Miler backpacking trip through the Mt. Whitney high country as we enter from the East in Onion Valley and travel through Inyo National Forest on our way to summit Mt. Whitney and exit through the Whitney Portal.  We will spend two days and nights getting acclimated to higher elevations.  We will be on the trail for 6 days and 7 nights with a summit on Day 5.  In total this is a 9-day trip.

  • Group is limited to 15 people
  • Scouts must have previously attended Northern Tier, Philmont, or a previous 50-Miler.
  • Required shakedowns
    • May 17-19 - Big Sur, 3-days, 2-nights, ~24 miles
    • July 19-21 - Mt. Dana (13,063'), 3-days, 2-nights, high altitude, ~10 miles
    • Scoutmaster will determine readiness based on shakedown trips.
  • Scouts and Adults MUST be in peak physical shape.
    • We expect you to follow a rigorous exercise routine leading up to the trip.
    • Your fitness plan will need to be approved and reviewed by the Scoutmaster.
  • Mt. Whitney is a high altitude environment (9,000-14,505').
    • If you have previously experienced altitude sickness this is NOT the trip for you!

Mon Aug. 5 - LAUMC to Grays Meadow

  • 7:00am - Meet at LAUMC, final pack inspection
  • 7:30am - Depart
  • 12:00pm - Lunch at Whoa Nellie Deli
  • 1:00pm - Depart for White Mountain Ranger Station in Bishop
  • 2:00pm - Pick up wilderness permit and supplies
  • 4:00pm - Depart
  • 5:00pm - Arrive at Grays Meadow
  • 6:00pm - Setup camp and cook dinner

Tue Aug. 6 - Grays Meadow to Onion Valley

  • 7:00am - Breakfast in camp
  • 8:30am - Depart
  • 9:00am - Drivers depart for Whitney Portal
  • 9:00am - Remaining Scouts and Adults go for day hike
  • 10:30am - Drivers leave 2 cars at Whitney Portal and drive 1 back
  • 12:00pm - Lunch
  • 5:00pm - Dinner

Awards

Participants on this trip will be eligible for the BSA "50 Miler" award as well as the "John Muir" award with the "Onion Valley to Mt. Whitney" rocker from the Los Angeles Area Council HAT program.  Scouts who went to Death Valley campout earlier this year and participate on the Mt. Dana shakedown will be eligible to earn the very cool "High Low" award which signifies that you hiked the highest (Mt. Whitney) and lowest (Badwater Basin) places in the contiguous United States in a 24 month period.
