First Year Hike - Huddart Park - March 15, 2014

What: First Year Hike - Huddart Park
When: March 15, 2014  Time:  7:30am to around noon.
Where: Meet at LAUMC Parking Lot at 7:30am
Who: First Year Scouts and Troop Guides
Cost: $1
SMIC: Jun Kim
Activity Coordinator: Kathy Bonte

This will be a 5-mile day-hike around beautiful Huddart Park. We will practice some basic compass and map reading skills, and review the ten essentials, before we take off on the hike. Scouts will receive credit for one activity toward rank advancement. Scouts will also have the opportunity to be tested for some requirements (see below).
We will:

Definitely cover:
T5:  Explain the rules of safe hiking, both on the highway and cross-country, during the day and at night. Explain what to do if you are lost.
S1b: Using a compass and a map together, take a five-mile hike (or 10 miles by bike) approved by your adult leader and your parent or guardian.*
S1a: Demonstrate how a compass works and how to orient a map. Explain what map symbols mean.
Hope to cover  (depending on if poison oak / native plants are readily visible from the trail):
T11:  Identify local poisonous plants; tell how to treat for exposure to them.
T6:  Identify or show evidence of at least 10 kinds of native plants found in your community.

Long shot:
S6:  Identify or show evidence of at least 10 kinds of wild animals (birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, mollusks) found in your community

NOTE: We will meet at LAUMC, then drive over to Huddart (at the WERDER picnic area parking lot).  After the hike, we will drive back to LAUMC.

Driving Directions:   Link to directions to Huddart Park from LAUMC.
