First Year Swimming - November 2, 2014

What:        First Year Swimming
When:       November 2, 2014 10am till Noon - You will be given a specific time to arrive.
Location:   1991 Deodara Dr, Los Altos, CA 94024

Who:    All Troop 33 Scouts in the first year program or other scouts that need the following requirements: Second Class 8B, 8C, First Class 9B

           You will not advance to second class unless you attend this event!

The First Year Scouts need some swimming requirements completed that can only be done at a pool.  These include the following:

S8b.    Demonstrate your ability to jump feet first into water over your head in depth, level off and swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming, then return to your starting place.

S8c.    Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects. Explain why swimming rescues should not be attempted when a reaching or throwing rescue is possible, and explain why and how a rescue swimmer should avoid contact with the victim.

F9b.    Successfully complete the BSA swimmer test, which includes:

  • Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
  • Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side, breast, trudgen, or crawl. Swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke.
  • The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
  • Rest by floating…Long enough to demonstrate ability to rest when exhausted.


With a helper and a practice victim, show a line rescue both as tender and as rescuer. (The practice victim should be approximately 30 feet from shore in deep water.)

The following are the arrival times for each Patrol:
10am: Thor
10:30am: Golden Beaked Eagles
11:00am: Black Fire
if you cannot make your specified time, contact Mr. Stanley & Mrs. Stick for an alternative time assignment.
This is not a drop and run event!
Parents Please Stay for the entire event since your son may finish quickly.
You can leave after your sons portion of the testing is done.
