Mountain Biking - May 13, 2014

What: Mountain Biking
When: May 13, 2014
Where: Monte Bello Open Space Preserve
Who: All Troop 33 Scouts
Requirements: Previous Monte Bello or training ride
Cost: Free
Activity Coordinator: Chris Le

NOTE: If you have not ride Monte Bello before, you need to attend one training on either Sunday April 27th or Sunday May 11, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, meet at Arastradero Preserve (1530 Arastradero Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94304) at 2:00 PM.

NOTE: MANDATORY bike check on Tuesday 5/6 at the Troop meeting.

NOTE: Meet up at the Monte Bello OSP Parking lot on Page Mill on 5/13 at 5:00pm SHARP!

The ride consists of about 5 miles on the Canyon Trail in the Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, followed by about 5 miles on Stevens Canyon Road.  Everyone must leave on time so we do not ride in the dark.  Scouts arriving late may have to be turned back.

What to Expect

  • The trail portion has a few steep sections (both down and up), but they are relatively short.
  • Most of the ride is downhill on smooth trails, but there will be some narrow, twisty, rough, and loose sections.
  • There will even be a creek crossing or two where usually at least your feet get wet!
  • The last 5 miles are on a public road, shared with cars (though not very many). Follow all traffic laws!
  • The total time for the ride can be anywhere from 1 to 2.5 hours, depending on the rider's skills and trail conditions.
  • Flat tires are a possibility, as are other minor mechanical issues that tend to slow up a group.
  • Riders will be broken up into groups with a staggered start times
The scenery is wonderful, but please watch out for poison oak, it's growing fast this time of year! Remember, this is a bike RIDE, not a race, so the most important things are to be safe, be courteous to other trail users, and HAVE FUN!!!

What to Bring

  • Mountain bike or equivalent in good repair, with good brakes, it is a bumpy trail!
  • Bike Helmet ... no helmet, no ride (adults as well)
  • Pump, patch and repair kit
  • Bike riding clothes, there will be some mud and creek crossings along the way
  • Drinking water
  • Optional : Mosquito repellent, a couple of the regrouping stops will have mosquitoes
  • Be prepared for poison oak along the trails

  • Wear a Helmet & Use the Buddy System
  • The terms of our Special Use Permit from the Open Space District include some of the following:
  • Helmet
  • Stay on designated trails
  • Maximum 15 MPH, 5 MPH when passing
  • Staggered Start of 15 riders per group, spaced 15 minutes apart. The faster group will go first, to avoid bunching on the trail.

NOTE: Meet up at the Monte Bello OSP Parking lot on Page Mill at 5:00pm SHARP!

We will hold a mandatory safety briefing at 5:15pm.  Late arrivals will cause the entire group to be delayed and we do not want to ride in the dark

Take Page Mill Rd (Palo Alto) West from 280, towards the hills. About 7.5 miles west of 280, you'll find two dirt parking lots: the main Monte Bello lot is on the left, and Los Trancos on the right. It is before you cross Skyline Blvd. (Hwy 35).
