  • Did you miss a mandatory 3-day, 2-night backpacking shakedowns?
  • Do you need to get in shape for Philmont? 
  • Do you just love hiking?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions then we have a deal for you!

Mr. Browning and Mr. Mellea will be leading back-to-back day hikes.  Each one will be ~10-11 miles with appreciable elevation gain/loss with the goal of making sure your boots and backpack fit and checking your fitness level.  Hiking two consecutive days is a great test of your overall fitness level.  At Philmont you will not have a week in between hikes to recover.  All you have is one night and then you have to hike again the next day.


Saturday - May 10

  • 6:30am - Meet at LAUMC
  • 6:45am - Drive to Rancho San Antonio OSP
  • 7:00am - Hike PG&E Trail to Black Mountain
  • 11:00am - Lunch on the trail
  • 2:30pm - Return to LAUMC
Route: PG&E Trail to Quarry Trail to Black Mountain
Stats: ~11-20 miles, +3,438' gain, -1,075' loss

Sunday - May 11

  • 6:30am - Meet at LAUMC
  • 6:45am - Drive to Castle Rock SP
  • 7:15am - Hike 
  • 11:00am - Lunch on the trail
  • 2:30pm - Return to LAUMC
Route: Castle Rock to Goat Rock to Castle Rock Trail Camp to Saratoga Gap Trail to Summit Rock
Stats: ~11 miles (elevation gain/loss not charted)

What to Bring

  • Backpack loaded to ~30lbs
    • You do not have to pack everything from the backpacking checklist
    • Do NOT only pack rocks or weights
    • DO include your tent, sleeping bag, clothes, and pad to distribute the weight
    • Water is a good way to get your pack weight up to the required amount
  • 2-3 Liters of water
  • Trail snacks (enough for 6-7 hours)
  • Sack lunch
  • Ten Essentials
  • Signed Activity Consent Form (see below)
