Clay target shooting is a fun and safe shotgun sport where mechanical traps are used to throw clay disc targets in varying directions. Sporting Clays is a clay target game designed to replicate every conceivable shot encountered in field shooting. On a Sporting Clays course, shooters are presented with a wide variety of targets that simulate the flight path of different game species (teal, dove, quail, pheasant and even a bouncing rabbit), such as flushing, crossing, incoming and other angling shots.  The Coyote Valley Sporting Clay (CVSC) Main Course is situated in natural surroundings and includes 19 stations with shooters moving from one station to the next to complete the course. Each station presents shooters with a different type of shot. At a "grouse station", for example, shooters might face flushing birds that zip in and out of the trees. At a “decoying duck station”, incoming targets may float in toward the shooter.  The course makes use of natural features such as woods and ponds to create a realistic setting for each type of shot. At any station, targets may be thrown as singles, simultaneous pairs, following pairs (one target right after the other), or report pairs (the second target launched at the sound of the gun being fired at the first).  To further challenge shooters, target size may vary from the standard trap/skeet clay bird to the smaller “midi” and “mini” targets, or a flat disc shaped “battue” target. There are even special “rabbit” targets that are thrown on end and skitter across the ground.

During our afternoon at CVSC, we will divide into groups of 3-5 Scouts with each group having an instructor.  The "experience package" at CVSC includes everything needed - instructor, gun, ammo, ear/eye protection.  You need to come dressed for a hike (Class B), and wear comfortable close toed shoes for uneven terrain and loose gravel surfaces. If you have glasses or other eyewear please bring that to wear or clear safety glasses will be provided and must be worn.

Before you go, all participants need to:

  • Contact CVSC and request a waiver, fill it out, and return to CVSC
    • Per CVSC, "If you are allowing a grandparent, relative, family friend, etc. to bring your minor child, you (The Parent and only The Parent) must contact us either via a phone call to (408) 778-3600 or an email to us at in order to request an online waiver form BEFORE the child arrives at CVSC. This link is only to be used by a parent who will not be on-site with their child."
