Meet at LAUMC at 12:30pm to depart for hike by 12:45pm.
This will be a 5-mile day-hike to fulfill Second Class requirement 3b. We will practice some basic compass and map reading skills, and review the ten essentials, before we take off on the hike.
Scouts will receive credit for one activity toward rank advancement. Scouts will also have the opportunity to be tested for requirements for Second Class 3a.

Second Class 3a. Demonstrate how a compass works and how to orient a map. Use a map to point out and tell the meaning of five map symbols.

Second Class 3b. Using a compass and map together, take a 5-mile hike (or 10 miles by bike) approved by your adult leader and your parent or guardian.

Tenderfoot 4b. Describe common poisonous or hazardous plants; identify any that grow in your local area or campsite location. Tell how to treat for exposure to them.

Scouts should wear their Boy Scout uniform (hat to socks) and bring the following required items from The Ten Essentials in a small backpack/fanny pack:
  • 1L water bottle (filled)
  • Compass (we recommend basic Silva or Suunto like the picture below)
  • Shoes for hiking/walking (no flip-flops or smooth soles!)
  • Rain gear
  • Snack
NOTE: Please print out and bring the Activity Consent form below to the Tuesday meeting or to the hike itself. No Scout will be able to go on the hike without the Activity Consent form filled out and signed by a parent or guardian.

NOTE: Parents - check out Ten Essentials for more information about hydration options and compasses.

What if if rains?

You are already bringing rain gear, so put it on and hike :-)
