First Year Orienteering - Bedwell Park - August 27, 2017

 First Year Orienteering
When: August 27, 2017
Who: First Year Scouts (if you are a Main troop scout who needs to work on their compass requirements, please contact Mr Stanley)
Cost: $0
Transportation:  Each scout is responsible to getting to and from the event, the troop is not organizing carpools, but feel free to self organize.

12:30pm - parents drop off scouts at Bedwell Park
3:00pm - parents pick up scouts at Bedwell Park

Please drive through the gate and park at the parking lot in the park

What to bring:
  • Compass
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Scout Book
  • Class B uniform

Note: If you cannot attend the entire event let us know what time you are available so we can get your covering/completing the most important parts while you are present.

Maps will be available on site.

divide in 2 groups

Group 1:
12:30 - 2:00pm orienteering
2:00 - 3:30pm Measure height of an object (tree or lantern) and width of a stream

Group 2:
12:30 - 2:00pm Measure height of an object (tree or lantern) and width of a stream
2:00 - 3:30pm orienteering

small 15 minute break in-between each class


First class requirement:
4a. Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers
at least one mile and requires measuring the height and/or width of
designated items (tree, tower, canyon, ditch, etc.).

4b. Demonstrate how to use a handheld GPS unit, GPS app on a smartphone,
or other electronic navigation system. Use GPS to find your current
location, a destination of your choice, and the route you will take to get
there. Follow that route to arrive at your destination.
