Swimming Merit Badge - June 24, 2018





What: Swimming Merit Badge 
When: June 24, 2018 8.45 am - 12:00pm
Where: Woodland Vista Swim and Racquet Club,
1991 Deodora Drive, Los Altos, CA, 94024, (between Arboretum Drive and St. Joseph Avenue)

Who: All Troop 33 Scouts who can complete BSA Swimming Requirement. Preference will be given to older scouts who are attempting to complete Eagle required merit badges
These are not swim lessons, nor does the Troop provide swim lessons
PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU SIGNUP AND CAN'T MAKE IT,  PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP OR AT LEAST 48 HRS IN ADVANCE SO THAT WE CAN FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO TAKE THE SPOT. THERE ARE VERY LIMITED SPOTS AND  WE WILL HAVE SCOUTS IN WAIT LIST.

Details

The Swimming Merit Badge workshop is open to any scouts (with the exception of the first year scouts) who can complete the BSA swimming requirement: 
  • Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
  • Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side, breast, trudgen, or crawl. Swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke.
  • The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
  • Rest by floating…Long enough to demonstrate ability to rest when exhausted.

Many country clubs offer classes and private instruction to both members and non-members. 

Scouts will need to read the swimming merit badge pamphlet prior to the workshop on May 13th, print out the workbook and complete requirements #1 and #8 to bring on the day.  During the workshop, scouts will be tested on requirements #2-#7.  

Agenda

1. Check homework (requirements #1 and #8)
2. Complete BSA swimming requirement
3. Swim continuously for 150 yards using front crawl, back crawl, side stroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke
4. Demonstrate water rescue methods
5. Demonstrate various floating requirements
6. Bring up objects from bottom of pool
7. Demonstrate various diving methods
