Details

Santa Cruz Mountain crisscrosses miles of trails which offers mountain bikers the magnificence of coast redwood forests with spectacular scenery. You will have the opportunity to ride an iconic 30 mile Skyline-to-the-Sea trail, weaving through redwoods, creeks and waterfalls, descending through Big Basin, following Waddell Creek to finish at Pacific Ocean Waddell Beach.  This ride is epic and fun, are you up to the challenge?!

NOTEYou must have intermediate level bike handling skills on dirt trails in order to successfully navigate this moderate to strenuous trail.
  • Space is limited to 20 scouts
  • Scouts who are working on their Cycling Merit Badge will be able to complete the following Mountain Biking requirement.
    • d. Lay out on a trail map a 22-mile trip. You may include multiple trail systems, if needed. Stay away from main highways. Using your map, make this ride in six hours.
  • Please sign and turn in the Activity Consent Form.  You may turn in paperwork to the Activity Coordinator at the beginning of the troop meeting.
  • Prerequisites
    • Previous Troop 33 cycling experience required
      • 50 miles from Los Altos to San Francisco or
      • 25 or 50 miles Coyote Creek Cycling Classic or
      • Monte Bello down hill or
      • Attended one of the Monte Bello training rides
  • Required Gear
    • Bike Helmet
    • Mountain Bike
    • Hybrid (No road bikes)
  • Parents - We need
    • Experienced adult cyclists to ride with the Scouts
    • Drivers with bike racks or trucks to transport bicycles and passengers from point to point

Packing List

  • Helmet
  • Biking gloves
  • Pump, patch and repair kit

  • Bike riding clothes, windbreaker/rain jacket
  • 2L water bottles or camelback
  • Sack lunch and snacks

Safety

  • Wear a Helmet (no helmet, no ride)
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands if you fall
  • Stay on designated trails

Agenda

8:00am - Meet at LAUMC, check out gear
8:30am - Depart for Big Basin Redwoods
9:30am - Drivers drop off bikers
10:00am - Ride starts from Skyline-to-the-Sea
11:30am - Stop for Lunch/Snack (30 min)
12:00pm - Continue riding towards Cascade Ranch
1:30pm - Visit Pie Ranch in Pescadero
2:30pm - Finish at Waddell Beach, drivers pick up bikers
3:00pm - Depart for LAUMC
