Details

NOTE: Please bring your bike for checks at 7:30pm on 4/30!
NOTE: If you have not ridden Monte Bello before or have missed the bike check on 4/30, you will need to attend the training ride 4-6pm on 5/5 at Arastradero Preserve (1530 Arastradero Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94304).

What to Expect

  • The trail portion has a few steep sections (both down and up), but they are relatively short.
  • Most of the ride is downhill on smooth trails, but there will be some narrow, twisty, rough, and loose sections.
  • There will even be a creek crossing or two where usually at least your feet get wet!
  • The last 5 miles are on a public road, shared with cars (though not very many). Follow all traffic laws!
  • The total time for the ride can be anywhere from 1 to 2.5 hours, depending on the rider's skills and trail conditions.
  • Flat tires are a possibility, as are other minor mechanical issues that tend to slow up a group.
  • Riders will be broken up into groups with staggered start times

What to Bring

  • Mountain bike or equivalent in good repair, with good brakes - It is a bumpy trail!
  • Bike Helmet ... no helmet, no ride (adults as well)
  • Biking gloves
  • Pump, patch and repair kit
  • Bike riding clothes - There will be some mud and creek crossings along the way
  • Drinking water
  • Optional : Mosquito repellent - a couple of the regrouping stops will have mosquitoes
  • Be prepared for poison oak along the trails

Safety

  • Wear a Helmet & Use the Buddy System
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands if you fall
  • The terms of our Special Use Permit from the Open Space District include some of the following:
    • Must wear a helmet
    • Stay on designated trails
    • Maximum 15 MPH, 5 MPH when passing
    • Staggered Start of 15 riders per group, spaced 15 minutes apart. The faster group will go first, to avoid bunching on the trail.

Drop-Off

NOTE: Meet up at the Monte Bello OSP Parking lot on Page Mill at 5:00pm SHARP!

We will hold a mandatory safety briefing at 5:15pm.  Late arrivals will cause the entire group to be delayed and we do not want to ride in the dark.

Take Page Mill Rd (Palo Alto) West from 280, towards the hills.
About 7.5 miles west of 280, you'll find two dirt parking lots:
the main Monte Bello lot is on the left, and Los Trancos on the right.
It is before you cross Skyline Blvd. (Hwy 35), if you hit skyline you have gone too far.
It is longer than you think it should be coming up Page Mill Road.

Pick-up (Different from the Drop-off)

Pizza will arrive around 6:45pm and bikers will arrive between 6:30-7:00pm.

Pick-up will be at the Canyon Picnic area of Upper Stevens Creek County Park.
This is a small picnic area about 0.1 miles up Stevens Canyon Road from the stop sign at Mount Eden Road

Tips for finding the pickup spot:
Start on foothill expressway - head south - just keep going.
It turns into Stevens Canyon Road.
Don't go left into the Steven Creek County Park entrance below the lake - we will be beyond the lake.
It is past the Sunnyvale Rod and Gun Club, past Montabello road, and past the main lake
When you hit a stop sign at the junction of Mt. Eden Road & Stevens Canyon Road you are close.
Go right and follow Stevens Canyon Road, the Canyon picnic area is just to your left, you may even smell the pizza!
