Swimming Merit Badge - May 19, 2019

 Swimming Merit Badge Workshop
When: May 19, 2019,  8am-11am
Where: Woodland Vista Swim and Racquet Club,
1991 Deodora Drive, Los Altos, CA, 94024, (between Arboretum Drive and St. Joseph Avenue)
Who: Troop 33 second year scouts and above and Girls 6th grade and over

The Swimming Merit Badge workshop is open to any scout (with the exception of the first year scouts) who can complete the BSA swimming requirement: 
  • Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
  • Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side, breast, trudgen, or crawl. Swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke.
  • The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
  • Rest by floating…Long enough to demonstrate ability to rest when exhausted.

Scouts will need to read the swimming merit badge pamphlet prior to the workshop on May 19th, print out the workbook and complete requirements #1 and #8 to bring on the day.  During the workshop, scouts will be tested on requirements #2-#7.  

Please note:   This merit badge workshop is not a swimming lesson.  Please carefully review the skills #2-7 to make sure you can complete them during the workshop. If you need suggestions for swimming lessons to prepare, please contact Kirstin Kim.


1. Check homework (requirements #1 and #8)
2. Complete BSA swimming requirement
3. Swim continuously for 150 yards using front crawl, back crawl, side stroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke
4. Demonstrate water rescue methods
5. Demonstrate various floating requirements
6. Dive down to bring up objects from bottom of pool
7. Demonstrate various diving methods
