Details

Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America’s premier High Adventure base with more than 200 square miles of rugged New Mexico wilderness. Philmont is the pinnacle of Scouting adventure.

Philmont has 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps. Scouts will backpack through a series of camps over 12 days and experience a wide variety of programs during their scout-selected trek. Programs such as archaeology, 3D archery, astronomy, black powder rifles, blacksmithing, burro packing, burro racing, fishing, fly fishing, gold mining & panning, homesteading, horse riding, mountain biking, rock climbing, shooting/reloading .30-06 rifles, shooting/reloading 12 gauge shotguns, western lore, wilderness first aid, and more. Ask any scout about Philmont and they either want to go or they will tell you amazing stories of their trek and how it was the best experience of their Scouting career. 30,000 people were on the waiting list last year...

Important Information

Requirements

A big part of success for a high adventure expedition like this will be each Crew Members commitment to making the trip a memorable one for all. Scouts will do this by participating in all of the preparation, training, team building, and activities leading up to the trip. Our crew will start training in the fall. A TOTAL COMMITMENT IS REQUIRED OF EACH CREW MEMBER.

  • Age limit (prior to participation)
  • Scouts must be First Class or higher by June 1, 2020 (Troop 33 requirement)
  • Must be in top physical condition
    • Must meet Philmont health/medical requirements
    • Must be able to carry a 30-40lb backpack 5-14 miles a day for 12 days at 6,500'-12,441' over rugged terrain for a total of 65-85 miles
    • Must participate in a physical training program
  • Must participate in a minimum of 3 of 5 shakedown hikes and 2 of 3 backpacking trips.  7 such trips will be scheduled.
  • Must attend all monthly planning meetings
  • Must meet with Scoutmaster and be approved

There is room for TWO CREWS FOR A TOTAL OF EIGHTEEN SCOUTS AND SIX ADULTS.

The total cost is TBD but the reservation fee is $1025/person.  If you are interested in going, please sign up at the link above and pay your $100 non-refundable deposit asap.  There will be a link added to the website page shortly.  In the meantime, please drop off a check made out to Troop 33 in an envelope in our mailbox or under the front door mat at our house at 441 East Edith Avenue, between Avalon and Doud.  Please pay your deposit as soon as possible as the troop has already paid the initial deposit for the two crews.  There will be two additional payments for the reservation fee:
  • Advance of $462.50/person due 9/25/2019
  • Balance of $462.50/person due 2/25/2020

NOTE FOR SCOUTS: Scoutmaster has the final call on crew rosters (scouts allowed to go).  Crew safety is our top priority, followed by the ability to keep Philmont's rigorous daily schedules.
NOTE FOR ADULTS:  Scoutmasters/ASMs will comprise most adults, then preference to the activity coordinator, then active committee members, then finally other adults.
