Lots of exciting news about merit badges coming out as the Jamboree is now underway.

Sustainability

This new merit badge joins the Eagle-required list as an option to Environmental Science. Merit badge pamphlets will be available in early August.

Programming

This new elective badge challenges Scouts to, among other things, "write, debug, and demonstrate a functioning program". Scouts may begin working on this once pamphlets arrive in Scout Shops in early August.

Cycling – Mountain biking option added!

This Eagle-required merit badge now includes a fat-tire (mountain biking) option. Scouts can choose between Swimming OR Hiking OR Cycling for one of their Eagle required merit badges. Instead of a 50-mile road biking trip that must be completed in eight hours, Scouts who choose the mountain biking option must finish a 22-mile trail ride in six hours.

Cooking

Don’t forget that as of January 1, 2014 the Cooking merit badge will become Eagle-required. The new requirements have not yet been released but they are hoping to have them by Thanksgiving.
