Scoutmaster Update

Friday through Sunday, Mr. Browning took 10 Scouts from Philmont Crew 618-T1 to Pescadero Creek and the were able to backpack 23 miles.  Mr. Gabrielson led 5 Scouts in 6 miles of bicycling at the Arastradero Preserve on Sunday preparing these Scouts for the Monte Bello bicycle ride on May 13th.  There is a Scoutmaster meeting Wednesday, April 30th at 7 pm.

THIS Tuesday

PLC starts at 6 pm in Room 9.  Main Troop will be conducting Fire Basics training.  The training will be at McKenzie Park, but do not meet there - we will meet at LAUMC first, and then walk to the park.  Headlamps highly recommended.  First year program will be preparing for their campout this weekend.

There is no Troop meeting May 13th, and that is why we have the Monte Bello Mountain Bike ride.  If you are not signed up yet, here is the link:  You must have extensive mountain biking experience, gone on the Monte Bello ride before, or go on a checkout ride prior to the 13th.  The next check-out ride is on May 13th (Mother's Day, yes, we know).  Details on that ride are on the activity web page.

Service Project Hours credit

May 3rd - Denali School Carnival Fundraiser.  There will be activities, international food trucks, raffles, and a silent auction.  They are asking the Boy Scout troop to help “man” the carnival activities.  This means standing there to collect tickets and ensuring that things are in order, or monitor trash cans or be runners for the volunteer leaders. Set-up/Clean-up would also be helpful.  The event runs from 11 - 4.  Please contact Ms. Karen Franks at 415.595.5464, for more details and signing up.

May 24th - Memorial Day Flag Placement at the Golden Gate National Cemetery.  This will be the last Troop organized service project you can earn service hours for (except any Eagle project that may come up before the end of the school year).

Pescadero Creek

This past weekend a crew with 10 Scouts and 3 Adults backpacked 23 miles in 3 days through amazingly pristine redwoods in Pescadero Creek County Park as part of the shakedown series for Philmont.  The crew did a great job and even survived the somewhat unexpected 13 mile day on Saturday just to see the “scenic overlook” that was allegedly 0.8 miles away but turned into a 2.5 mile uphill jaunt.  We avoided all the predicted rain and just had a misty morning for our Sunday hike out.

Monte Bello Mountain Biking is on Tuesday May 13. Sign-ups now open.

The ride consists of about 5 miles on the Canyon Trail in the Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, followed by about 5 miles on Stevens Canyon Road, pizza and drinks will be served at the end of the ride. This event is free to sign up.

Memorial Day Weekend Flag Placement - Saturday, May 24

Join us for this important annual event for scouts and their families to honor the memory of those men and women who have served our country.  We will meet early Saturdaymorning at LAUMC to drive up to Golden Gate National Cememtery and will return by noon.  All Scouts, friends and families are welcome to participate.  We willl need parent drivers!

Pt. Reyes Backpacking Trip - May 16 - 18

This is an intermediate backpacking trip for the main troop.  Spend Friday night at Samuel P. Taylor State Park, and then depart Saturday morning for Wildcat Camp.  Saturday evening may included a sunset walk to Alamere Falls!  The cost is $25 per person, and food will be purchased separately.  There are only 20 spots, so sign up soon!

Please remember that this is a MANDATORY shakedown hike.  All crew members are expected to participate.

Kirara-hama, Japan

In 2015, more than 30,000 Scouts and leaders from 161 countries around the world will converge on Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi, Japan, for the 23rd World Scout Jamboree.  Our Council has a strong tradition of sending many of our scouts to the World Jamboree as part of contingent troops.  Several of our adults have been selected to serve in leadership positions and registration for scouts is now open. Scouts and Venturers applying to attend the 23rd World Scout Jamboree as part of the Boy Scouts of America's contingent must be between 14 and 17 years of age at the time of the Jamboree. Interested scouts are strongly encouraged to sign up immediately  At this point, a $250 deposit is required. The total cost to attend the 2015 World Scout Jamboree as part of the Boy Scouts of America's contingent is $5,750, which includes round-trip airfare; the registration fee paid to the Scout Association of Japan; a two- to three-day tour of Japan; lodging; ground transportation; meals; troop equipment, including tents and cots; items provided to each participant including a duffel bag, day pack, neckerchiefs, and contingent patches; shipping of equipment to Japan; insurance; and other costs.
