Scoutmaster Update

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

Tuesday, instead of the regular Troop meeting, 27 Scouts headed to Sky High in Santa Clara for many (I really mean many!) games of dodge ball on the trampolines, as well as bouncing and jumping in a foam-filled pit.  These boys have talent!  Thanks to Brett Pauly and Kevin Kafayi as the Scoutmaster-in-Charge and Scout-in-Charge, and to Susan Stick for organizing and collecting the forms and payment for this event.

Saturday, 17 Scouts and 8 leaders/parents volunteered at the Salvation Army in San Jose, filling over 700 boxes with food that will be distributed to families in need for the holidays.  They additionally cleaned up the left-over boxes and packaging, and then organized the area where toys will be given to children that may not have any gifts for Christmas.  This annual event for the Troop was again very successful and meaningful as it provides so much for those that have little.  Great big thanks to Alan Cyron for organizing this, providing the impetus and energy that makes it so a worthwhile event.  Plus, he brought plenty of donuts.  Thanks also to Austin Townsend as the Scout-in-Charge, and thank you to all the parents and adult leaders who helped out and gave of their time!

The web site is up and sign-ups are open for the Death Valley trip over the Martin Luther King weekend in January, Jan 15 – 18.  This is a favorite and very fun trip for the Troop, and there is a limit on how many can attend.  Sign up now to secure your place for this one-of-a-kind event.  You will go to the lowest point (elevation) in the contiguous United States, plus see other out-of-this-world sights.

THIS Tuesday

Cake Auction!  Bring your best (and even outlandish) cake creations to be auctioned off for charity.  Many of the First Year Scouts will be catching up on some of their requirements on their Trail to First Class.

This is the last meeting for 2015.  Everybody have a great holiday break, and we’ll see you again on January 5th!

Would you like to earn the Rifle Shooting merit badge?

Have you ever wanted to learn how to shoot a rifle?

Have you shot a rifle at camp and wanted more range time?

You are in luck!!  I am coordinating two evenings of supervised, safe, and fun rifle shooting at the Sunnyvale Rod & Gun Club.  Sunnyvale Rod & Gun Club will provide a Range Master, Range Safety Officer, and several experienced rifle club members.  A local Venture Crew will be bringing their rifles and helping with instruction.  I will serve as one of the Rifle Instructors for the evening.  I have secured the use of the range on two separate Friday evenings for our use.  We will setup 10 lanes with both paper and reactive (steel) targets at 50 feet, 50 yards, and 100 yards.  Scouts will shoot single-fire, bolt-action rifles.  Scouts 14 or older will have a chance to shoot Ruger 10/22 auto-loader rifles.

You have several options to consider:

1.       I want to earn the merit badge – must attend classes Tue 1/12 & 1/26 from 5:30-7:15pm, must attend range dates

2.       I already have the merit badge – must attend safety briefing Tue 1/12 or 1/26, can attend range dates

3.       I just want to try it out for fun – must attend safety briefing Tue 1/12 or 1/26, can attend range dates

NOTE: Parents MUST attend with their son  (the club requires one adult for every Scout)
