Scoutmaster Update

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

Here’s hoping you and your sweetheart had a terrific Valentine’s Day, and that you all enjoy the fabulous weather that President’s Day has brought us!   Plus, you get a week off from Scouting as there is no meeting this Tuesday.

If you are a current First Year Program parent and missed the transition briefing on Tuesday evening, you can find the briefing slides on the Documents page of our web site:

A couple of announcements:

First, Ross Rutner, a former Eagle Scout from Troop 33, has joined us as an Assistant Scoutmaster.  Ross will be assisting Peter Stanley with the new First Year Program starting next month. Please take the time to meet him and say hello.

Second, please join me in congratulating Max Drummond as the new Senior Patrol Leader, elected to the position last week by the Scout members of the Troop.

Upcoming events include:

Patrol Leader Elections are February 24th, to include Order of the Arrow Elections.

The mandatory ILST for all newly elected leaders and assigned positions is March 1st.

Sporting Event - Stanford vs. UC California Men’s Basketball is February 21st.

Snow Camping (at least cold weather camping) is March 7th and 8th.

Troop Merit Badge Midway is Saturday morning, March 14th.

THIS Tuesday

Activity Coordinator Positions open

Kathleen McGall

Making great progress in signups, but still need couple more. A big thank you to everyone who has signed up already.

First year activities for this spring will require ACs, we give the new first year parents a break on this until fall (they have enough to adjust to--remember when you were a new parent), so please sign up as these activities are added.

Please sign up even if you have never been an AC. You will be trained. Link to signups is at the top of the activities page.

This is a critical role for our troop to be able to offer as many activities as we do. Plus each family is expected to volunteering two types of roles every year and this role will fulfill one of your volunteer roles for the troop. An AC is required to sign up for one event per year. Also as an AC you or your scout do not need to attend the event. If we do not get an AC for an activity we will need to cancel it.

We have some exciting opportunities for AC coming up that still need assignment:

Activities requiring AC.

1. Camporee (4/17-4/19)

2. First Year campout (4/18-4/19)

3. First Year Bedwell Park Orienteering (5/9)

Please sign up to help!  Thank you!  Please contact me with any questions.

We return every year to camp by Huntington Lake, located in the Sierra Mountains south of Yosemite and north of Kings Canyon at an elevation of 7000-8000 ft. and accessible only by pontoon boat. The camp is about 240 miles away, a 5-6 hour drive by chartered bus.

  • Aquatics?  Check.

  • Nature?  Check.

  • Handicrafts?  Check.

  • Shooting sports?  Check.

  • Great food?  Check.

Troop 33 stays at the Navajo Campsite, which houses roughly 50 people. Days are spent working on merit badges such as woodcarving, mammal study, rifle shooting, canoeing and swimming, and free time is usually filled with card games, ball games and trips to the Trading Post. Meals are prepared by the amazing staff and served buffet style with plenty of options - no one walks away hungry! Scouts sleep in raised-floor 2-person canvas tents.

Camp Oljato is a wonderful opportunity to be immersed in boy scouts for a week. The scouts forge strong connections while enjoying a week full of adventure. They’ll arrive home smelly, dirty and with many stories to share. Please sign up quickly to reserve your spot! This is a popular camp with only a limited number of spots available, and we fill to capacity each year.

Interested adults may sign up too. While preference is given to uniformed adult leaders, there are always a few additional adult volunteers needed. Oljato also offers a family campsite. Find more on this at

Please contact Ann Reid,, with questions.
