Scoutmaster Update

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

What a great Saturday it was for the 20 Scouts on their second day working on the Cooking Merit Badge.  They made all of their meals outdoors to include backpacking cooking and using Dutch ovens.  Once again they made wonderful meals (to include some interesting variations), and most of the Scouts have completed or are very close to completing the merit badge.  So many thanks and deserved adulation to Brian Mellea, Kimberly Dickerson, Chris Migdal, Ann Reid, Doug MacLeod, Judy Bergwerk, Laurie Hartford, Peter Stanley, Jun Kim, Karen Townsend, Martha Gomez - there were so many adults helping run this thing, I can’t even keep track, so if I missed listing your name, my apologies!.

Scouts! If you are attending the Council Merit Badge Midway this Saturday, January 31st, be sure to get a Merit Badge Blue Card signed by any of the Scoutmasters at Tuesday’s meeting (make sure you fill out the card properly before submitting it for signature).  You need to take it with you to the Rally.  They will not be giving out cards at the Rally.

Activity Coordinator positions still open and one needing replacement

Kathleen McGall katom882002@yahoo.com

Four Activity Coordinators (ACs) are needed. Thank you to everyone who has signed up already.

Please sign up even if you have never been an AC. You will be trained. Link to signups is at the top of the activities page.

This is a critical role for our troop to be able to offer as many activities as we do. Plus each family is expected to volunteering two types of roles every year and this role will fulfill one of your volunteer roles for the troop. An AC is required to sign up for one event per year. Also as an AC you or your scout do not need to attend the event. If we do not get an AC for an activity we will need to cancel it.

We have some exciting opportunities for AC coming up that still need assignment:

Activities requiring AC.

1. Camping-Shooting sports (3/27-3/29)

2. Camporee (4/17-4/19)

3. Memorial Day Flag Placement (needs new AC) (5/23)

4. Shoreline Water Sports (5/30)

Please sign up to help!  Thank you!  Please contact me with any questions

Order of Arrow dues should be paid online

Judy Bergwerk judyb@alum.mit.edu

Steven Rutledge steven.r.rutledge@gmail.com

On February 8, we have Scout Sunday where we give back to the Church by helping to run the service.  This is our way of giving thanks for all that LAUMC does for us.  If you are in need of service hours or just want to help, we need all the help we can get.  So far only 8 scout have signed up.  You can be a greeter, speaker, or pass out bulletins. Also the speech can help you fulfill the 5 minute speech needed for the communications merit badge.

This Tuesday, January 27 is the deadline for the February 10 Board of Review.  The March Board of Review is on March 17 and the deadline is March 3.

Reminders

Reminder: Camp Oljato July 5 - 11, 2015

Ann Reid car@annreid.com

Sign up is now open for Camp Oljato. This is a real favorite with Troop 33!

We return every year to camp by Huntington Lake, located in the Sierra Mountains south of Yosemite and north of Kings Canyon at an elevation of 7000-8000 ft. and accessible only by pontoon boat. The camp is about 240 miles away, a 5-6 hour drive by chartered bus.

  • Aquatics?  Check.

  • Nature?  Check.

  • Handicrafts?  Check.

  • Shooting sports?  Check.

  • Great food?  Check.

Troop 33 stays at the Navajo Campsite, which houses roughly 50 people. Days are spent working on merit badges such as woodcarving, mammal study, rifle shooting, canoeing and swimming, and free time is usually filled with card games, ball games and trips to the Trading Post. Meals are prepared by the amazing staff and served buffet style with plenty of options - no one walks away hungry! Scouts sleep in raised-floor 2-person canvas tents.

Camp Oljato is a wonderful opportunity to be immersed in boy scouts for a week. The scouts forge strong connections while enjoying a week full of adventure. They’ll arrive home smelly, dirty and with many stories to share. Please sign up quickly to reserve your spot! This is a popular camp with only a limited number of spots available, and we fill to capacity each year.

Interested adults may sign up too. While preference is given to uniformed adult leaders, there are always a few additional adult volunteers needed. Oljato also offers a family campsite. Find more on this at http://www.pacsky.org/Camps/Oljato.

Please contact Ann Reid, car@annreid.com, with questions.
