Feb 13: Citizen Opportunity

Scoutmaster Corner

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

Saturday, nine Scouts and three adults went to the Salvation Army San Jose headquarters to weatherproof the barrels used for the Christmas-time toy and food distribution.  It was a perfect day for being outside and the Scouts did a great job of covering with and taping the plastic over the barrels to protect them from the elements.  Huge thanks to Alan Cyron for organizing this event, and to Rodney Hartunian for driving and working with the Scouts.

Sunday, eleven Scouts helped our local Girl Scout Troops with their annual Girl Scout Cookie Distribution.  The event was at the Almond Elementary School in Los Altos, and the Scouts helped to sort, stage and load the boxes of cookies as each Troop came by to get their cookies.  Thank you Scouts for helping out and all the hard work!

Important Information for February

Feb 6 – Current First Year Parent’s Transition presentation with Alan and Chris

Feb 13 – Senior Patrol Leader Election

Feb 20 – No Meeting. Winter break (or Ski Week)

Feb 27 – Order of the Arrow Elections

   Patrol Leader Elections

This Tuesday

All Scouts will participate in the Court of Honor.  The ceremony should only run until 8:30, so parents, either stick around or come back to pick up your Scout at that time.

UNLESS, you are going to Boulder Creek this weekend.  We will have a meeting right after the ceremony to finalize meal planning, identify equipment needed and assign the equipment for Scouts to sign out Saturday morning.

Troop 33 has a few open committee positions!

And we need your help. Please consider signing up for one of these open positions. Click the link to see a description of the position.

Please reply to Amy Mendenhall at for questions or to sign up.

Reminder: Let’s go to a Sharks game!

Troop 33 has an opportunity to go watch the San Jose Sharks play the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 4th.  If you’ve never seen a hockey game, it’s the fastest game on earth.  The Sharks are currently in second place in the Pacific Division for a playoff slot, so this will be an important game, which means lots of excitement.  No prior knowledge of hockey is required to have a great time.

Date: 04 March 2018 at 6 PM (Sunday) — leave at 4:30pm from LAUMC, return by 9 pm

Game: San Jose Sharks vs Columbus Blue Jackets

Signups opening soon.

Reminder: Citizenship Opportunity (rescheduled)

The Mayor of Sunnyvale, Glenn Hendricks, will speak to our First Year Scouts at LAUMC on February 13th.  This is a reschedule from January when he had the flu.  This will satisfy First Class requirement.

Reminder: Want to try backpacking for the first time? Need more camping or cooking?

"The Boulder Creek Experience" February 3 - 4, 2018

It's choose-your-own-adventure time! This camping trip is perfect for scouts who want to...

  • try some entry-level backpacking, or

  • catch up on some rank requirements (camping, cooking, campfire skills, ax yard, LNT, etc.), or

  • go on a 5 mile hike (day hike).

Cubland will be our "home base" where some scouts (some First Years + others) will spend the weekend working on requirements, cooking, campfires, skills and a 5 mile hike. Separately the Adventure Patrol will hold a backpacking clinic at Cubland in the morning and guide ready-hikers a few miles into the Boulder Creek "back-country" for an overnighter. The Adventure Patrol will coordinate this with more instructions at the 1/23 Troop Meeting.
