Jan 13: MLK Weekend in San Diego

Scoutmaster Corner

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

Saturday was the first cooking day for the nine Scouts taking the Cooking merit badge.  They made chicken quesadillas with fresh pico de gallo (salsa fresca), of which I was able to taste-test each one, and they all were very good.  They also made their own Bolognese sauce and served it over spaghetti noodles.  Troop 33 and I cannot thank enough Kimberly Dickerson, Laurie Hartford and Brian Mellea for taking on this Eagle-required merit badge once it became mandatory for Eagle rank three years ago.  Without their dedication, commitment and time to help Scouts earn this badge, I believe many Scouts would not had the opportunity to learn about cooking in such a professional and fun way.  Thank you all so very much!

Noteworthy News

Vian Patel, a First Year Scout in Troop 33 and sixth-grader at Almond School, completed the 45th Honolulu Marathon Dec. 10. He finished the 26.2-mile race in 7 hours, 59 minutes and 44 seconds. Vian placed 17,268th out of more than 33,000 participants. The 11-year-old was among the youngest competitors in the men’s 15-19 division. He prepared for the event by running two half marathons and several 5K, 10K and 12K races over the past two years.

Nikolas Gibson was named to the SCVAL El Camino Division First Team for Boys Cross-County.  Nikolas attends Los Altos High School, and as a Life Scout, is an active member of Troop.  He is currently working on his Eagle project.

Congratulations to both Scouts.

This Tuesday

This month’s theme is Winter Sports and Activities, and the Main Troop will be learning about winter weather, snowflakes, and snow shoes, and will compete in a snowshoe baton rally.

First Year Scouts will continue to work on their rank advancement requirements.

Patrol Leader Council (PLC) is Tuesday evening, 6 pm in Room 9.  All members of the Green Bar are required to be there to plan Troop meetings for February.

Reminder: Want to try backpacking for the first time? Need more camping or cooking?

"The Boulder Creek Experience" February 3 - 4, 2018

It's choose-your-own-adventure time! This camping trip is perfect for scouts who want to...

  • try some entry-level backpacking, or

  • catch up on some rank requirements (camping, cooking, campfire skills, ax yard, LNT, etc.), or

  • go on a 5 mile hike (day hike).

Cubland will be our "home base" where some scouts (some First Years + others) will spend the weekend working on requirements, cooking, campfires, skills and a 5 mile hike. Separately the Adventure Patrol will hold a backpacking clinic at Cubland in the morning and guide ready-hikers a few miles into the Boulder Creek "back-country" for an overnighter. The Adventure Patrol will coordinate this with more instructions at the 1/23 Troop Meeting.

Reminder: Additional Den Chief Opportunities

Thanks to the 14 scouts who have taken on the role of Den Chief this year; their presence and help have been greatly appreciated by the Cub Scout Dens that they have been working with.  It has recently come to my attention that Pack 78 in Los Altos could use a few additional Den Chiefs.

If you are  1st class rank or higher and are interested in this Position of Responsibility, please contact Mr. Alfred Chin at a Troop Meeting or email him at:  Alfred_chin@hotmail.com

If you are not familiar with this Position of Responsibility (PoR), the Den Chief is a significant Leadership position. As Den Chief, you'll be working closely with the local cub scout Dens and Packs, supporting and helping to organize and lead their activities, setting a good example for the younger scouts, and will be an important factor in recruiting new scouts to our Troop.

In general, anyone who meets the following guidelines is a candidate for Den Chief:

- A Boy Scout who has been approved by their ScoutMaster to serve as a Den Chief, is 12 years or older, and ideally 1st class rank or higher.  Den Chief Training (either online, classroom, or both) is required.

The Den Chief assignment is intended to span the entire school year,  Please note that we generally restrict Den Chief Services to Two terms, maximum.  That gives other scouts an opportunity, and it encourages past Den Chiefs to pursue other PoR positions within the Troop.
