Scoutmaster Update

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

Saturday and Sunday 24 Scouts from the First Year Program and their Troop Guides camped overnight at the Boulder Creek Scout Reservation to work on many of their requirements on the trail to First Class.  The cooked their own dinners, erected tents, learned how to handle pocket knives, hatchets and saws, light camp fires and stoves, properly raise, lower and fold the United States flag, and a multitude of other skills and activities.  All First Year Scouts earned their Totin’ Chip nad Firem’n Chit cards.  James Pampeyan led the campfire program which included skits and a flag retirement ceremony.  Three Scouts attended in order to complete their EDGE requirement towards their Life rank, and many thanks go to Peter Stanley, Ross, Rutner, Tom Poppitz, Alan Cyron, Jun Kim and Craig Pampeyan for their time and efforts.  Also thanks to Rick Valestra coordinating this all as the Activity Coordinator, and all the drivers that dropped off and/or picked up the Scouts Saturday and Sunday.

This Tuesday

Boards of Review.

Main Troop will be conducting a bike race/ triathlon, and baton relay.  First Year Program starts on its requirements for Scout rank.

Parent Involvement with the Troop

Recall from the parents’ meeting that each family is required to volunteer in two ways.  For non-uniformed volunteer positions, one of the two ways is to be either a Committee Member or an Activity Coordinator.  We cannot deliver the variety of activities without every family contributing.  We need everyone’s support to keep our program strong.  You will be trained and we have full documents you can access and read to learn more about your role.

Committee Member Openings:

1. Training Coordinator: description can be found on the website using the path - Parents‎ > ‎Volunteers‎ > ‎Committee‎ > Training Coordinator

2. Reservations Coordinator: description can be found on the website using the path - Parents‎ > ‎Volunteers‎ > ‎General‎ > ‎Reservations Coordinator

Activity Coordinators for the months of May and June:

First of all, a big THANK YOU for those who have signed up!  We have four more left!  Sign up here or contact Rick Valestra aresvee@sbcglobal.net.

Reminder: Camp Oljato July 10 - 16

Camp Oljato is a firm favorite with Troop 33. Join the fun for an extra special camp this year as Camp Oljato celebrates its 75th anniversary!

Learn more and sign up for an outdoor adventure, earn merit badges, learn new skills, and enjoy new activities for this year like horseback riding, log rolling, and waterskiing. (The food’s pretty good too.)

We return every year to this beautiful camp on Huntington Lake, located in the Sierra Mountains south of Yosemite and north of Kings Canyon at 7000-8000 foot elevation, accessible only by pontoon boat. The camp is about 240 miles away, a 5-6 hour drive by chartered bus. It offers aquatics on the lake, nature, handicrafts, and shooting sports areas.  Each year, we reserve the Navajo Campsite, which houses the roughly 50 members of Troop 33 who attend. Days are spent working on merit badges such as woodcarving, mammal study, rifle shooting, canoeing and swimming, and free time is usually filled with card games, ball games and trips to the Trading Post. Meals are prepared by the amazing staff and served buffet style with plenty of options - no one walks away hungry. Sleeping arrangements include raised floor canvas tents that sleep 2.

Sounds like fun, yes? Camp Oljato offers a wonderful opportunity to be immersed in boy scouts for a week. Scouts forge strong connections while enjoying a week full of adventure. They’ll arrive home smelly, dirty and with many stories to share. Please sign up quickly to reserve your spot! This is a popular camp with only a limited number of spots available, and we fill to capacity each year.  Interested adults should sign up as well. While preference is given to uniformed adult leaders, there are always a few additional adult volunteers needed. Contact Ann Reid car@annreid.com with questions.
