Life Scouts – are you looking for an Eagle Project?

The living gardens projects in the Mountain View Whisman School District has 1-2  garden projects at Huff and Landels elementary schools.  Huff is a small native garden with pathways and turf removal (use a turf cutter to scrape off the turf), thus eligible for a rebate from the Water District.  Landels is similar, but there are also four raised planter boxes at one end of the garden.  Both need to be completed before mid-August and so if started soon after school lets out in June would be ideal.  Please contact if you are interested.

Trip Report:  First Year Hike at Huddart Park, Woodside

On Saturday morning, 20 First Year Scouts, 8 older scouts, and 10 adults trekked 5 miles on the Dean and Crystal Springs Trail loop.  The day had fantastic weather, the surroundings were beautiful, and the banana slug count was into double digits.  The First Year scouts were very well prepared for the hike, all bringing enough water and snacks, as well as having gear to deal with the brisk morning air.  We had a lot of fantastic parents that came out and enjoyed the festivities and helped out with transportation (and some handy gps apps!).

Troop guides went through their compass and map skills and the younger scouts took it in well.  Everyone hiked well with only a few sore feet / legs - nothing a set of good hiking socks and good shoes can't help along with coming out on a few more hikes!

Mr Crane had a GPS trace of our hike below.  Our hike is the big jagged loop toward the left.  We were able to see redwoods, douglas firs, coastal oaks, tan oak, madrone, sword ferns, redwood sorrel, and western hound's tongue.  And of course some poison oak, but luckily that helped everyone with a requirement!   We also ran into banana slugs, termites, woodpeckers, squirrels, and lizards.

I wanted to thank everyone for coming out;  it was a great time.

Jun Kim, T33 ASM

Reminder: Need some scouting gear? Have something you no longer need? Read on…

Scouts and parents:

  • Do you have outdoor gear that is still in great condition but outgrown or no longer needed?

  • Would you be interested in selling it to another scout?

We bet there is a lot of gear in our storage that is no longer in use. We'd like to find out if there is enough interest in selling and buying to set aside time during a Tuesday meeting later this month or in March as a gear flea market.

Please think about your outgrown/unused gear and think about your needs for spring and summer hiking and camping. Then fill out the survey here.
