T33 Weekly Blast: March 6

March 18: Ano Nuevo state park

Scoutmaster Corner

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

This past weekend, 17 hardy Scouts and four adults camped at the Spicer Sno-Park near Bear Valley on HWY 4.  Saturday was a very nice day with sunshine and mild temperatures.  The Scouts dug a snow cave, snowshoed, sledded, and tire-tubed all over the terrain.  They also successfully started a campfire they were able to keep going for a couple of hours before dinner.  Saturday night we all experienced a major snowstorm with 12 – 18 inches of snow and high winds.  A couple of the tents had slight cave-ins, but nothing significant.  Sunday it continued snowing and was colder, and the snow plows did not clear the sno-park in the morning, so we were very delayed returning home due not getting a clear path out of the parking lot until mid-afternoon.  But all was good, the Scouts had fun and enjoyed their first snow camping, and most want to do it again.  Thanks to Ameen Qureshi as the Scout-in-Charge, Craig Pampeyan, Loui Daltchev and Jing Wang for driving and supporting the Scouts.  Major thanks to Zoe Hu as the Activity Coordinator to setting up so much of the activity and staying on top of us (mainly me) for making this trip happen.

This Tuesday

Main Troop -   Senior Patrol Leader and appointed Positions of Responsibility Swearing-In Ceremony; Welcoming of and group activity with the new First Year Program Scouts; Patrol alignments and balancing; Patrol Leader elections; Scout Skills Jeopardy.

First Year Program – Welcoming and leadership introductions; patrol alignment; basic administrative business.

If you like beautiful nature hikes and getting to look at cute baby animals, this is the activity for you!  On Saturday, March 18, we will be going to Ano Nuevo state park,  where the northern elephant seals come ashore every year to mate & give birth.  We will take a docent-guided walking tour of the breeding grounds to see the elephant seals (adult & baby) in their natural habitat.  This is a 2.5 hour walking tour over 3 miles of moderately strenuous terrain (sand, sloping terrain, etc).  It is a beautiful park and a unique opportunity to see these amazing animals.

If you are interested in this activity, PLEASE sign up SOON.  SPACES ARE LIMITED!! We can only take about 20 scouts and 4-5 adults.  Don't wait too long and miss this wonderful opportunity! Sign up here.
