Scoutmaster Update

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

Happy Memorial Day, everybody!  Today we honor the men and women of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines who had served our Nation in time of peace and war that have passed away, or had given the ultimate sacrifice of giving their life in combat.  Many of us have family members that have served our great nation over our history, and our remembrance of them today honors their memory and service.

Troop 33 again has honored these service members by placing flags at many of the 118,000 + grave sites at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno on Saturday.  We had over 30 Scouts participate, and not only did they place flags in the large section we were assigned, they moved over to a section that had not a Scout unit assigned and placed many more flags to honor those service members.  Thank you’ s to Alan Cyron for arriving early to get our assigned section and picking up the pokers, to Max Drummond as the Scout-in-Charge, and to our Order of the Arrow members, Jared and Ryan Biesty, and Andrew Marcopulos for directing traffic and helping to set up for the opening ceremonies.

After the flag placement, six Scouts, three adults, and one dog climbed up one of the most majestic peaks in the Bay Area, Montara Mountain.  After a picnic lunch of taqueria burritos with a beautiful ocean vista from a 600 foot perch, these intrepid hikers climbed all the way to the top, into the clouds, at 1900 feet.  Unfortunately, the fog was so thick that the sweeping views that this peak is known for were nowhere to be found, however, it made for a pleasant temperature to hike in, and the Scouts enjoyed having a snack inside a cave near the top.  Everyone had a great time, and we hope this becomes a Memorial Day weekend tradition!

Finally, yesterday, we recognized, honored and celebrated the advancement to Eagle rank of Jeremy Binkley.  The Eagle Court of Honor for him was held outdoors at Ortega Park in Sunnyvale.  Jeremy had many of his friends there to help in the ceremony, Glenn Ready, Drew Jones, Zachary Ottoes and Kai Jarmon, in addition to his family and other friends.  It was a great afternoon and a wonderful ceremony.  We wish Jeremy the best of luck as he heads off for the University of California, Santa Barbara, and many thanks for his involvement and leadership in Troop 33.  Thanks to Kimberly Dickerson for setting up the ceremony, Brent Browning as the Master of Ceremonies, and Alan Cyron for administering the Eagle charge and oath.

There are many Scouts going before the Board of Review tomorrow evening, so as a reminder, wear your full Scout uniform (shirt, neckerchief with slide or bolo tie, Merit Badge Sash, pants or shorts with belt if not a self-belt, Scout socks and shoes – not flip-flops).

Reminder: Parents needed for May 26 Board of Review

Mrs Stanley marilynb@stanford.edu

Parents are needed to help with Board of Reviews on May 26.  We have several first year scouts participating in the Board of Review as well as many older scouts.  We currently have 24 scouts looking to do reviews, and I need another 20(!) parents who can help with reviews.

We'll start when the announcements are over at approximately 7:45 p.m. and should be done close to 9 p.m.

Please let me know if you can help on Tuesday.  Please email me at marilynb@stanford.edu

If you have not done a Board of Review before, it's fairly straight forward and I can cover what is needed prior the review.  If you have not had a chance to volunteer time to the troop and need to, this is a great opportunity to help in a very meaningful and fulfilling way.

Reminder: Annual end-of-year picnic is June 9, 5:30 to 8pm

Janet Kolstad janetkolstad@gmail.com

Folks, mark your calendars for the troop’s annual end-of-year picnic to be held on Tuesday evening, June 9th, from 5:30 to 8pm.  This year, the picnic will be held in Shoup Park on University Ave in Los Altos.  We’ll have our usual assortment of burgers and hot dogs with a vegetarian option.  Families will be asked to bring a side dish, salad or dessert to share, depending on the first letter of their last name:

A-H - please bring a side dish

I - P - please bring a salad

Q - Z - please bring a dessert

There will be signups for grillers, set up crew and shoppers (adult positions) as well as some scouts to help direct traffic soon - please sign up if you can help!
