Scoutmaster Update

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

Here we are ending the last weekend in May, and we are still very busy!

First, I wish you all a Happy Memorial Day; and for those families’ forefathers, fathers and mothers, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, that served in the military in past conflicts of this great nation that either paid the ultimate sacrifice during war, or served and have since passed away, today is for the remembrance of what they have done for all of us in the United States, and we shall always honor and cherish them.

Our Troop did exactly that in honoring the multitude of service members interred at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno Saturday.  35 Scouts and 14 parents planted flags in front of the grave stones at the cemetery.  This was a very solemn, yet fun event for all.  Thanks to Winn Hartford as the Scout-in-Charge, Laurie Harford for organizing the event as the Activity Coordinator, Alan Cyron for his support and early arrival to secure the section to place the flags, and all the parents that drove the Scouts to the event.

After the flag placement activity, six Scouts and five adults hiked up to Montara Mountain on the coast.  It was over eight miles and had an elevation gain about 1600 feet.  Thanks to David McAllister as the Scout-in-Charge, Brett Pauly as the Scoutmaster-in-Charge, and again to Laurie Hartford as the Activity Coordinator.  And, if you haven’t stopped by Gerkin’s sandwich shop in Montara, you need to do so.  They have great sandwiches!

Finally, on Sunday. Five Scouts and four uniformed leaders from the two Philmont crews hiked from Rancho San Antonio to the top of Black Mountain.  It was a 13 mile round trip hike with an over 2400 elevation gain.  Thanks to Curtis McAllister for arranging this hike as the Activity Coordinator.

THIS Tuesday

Tuesday is the last regular meeting of this school year.  The main Troop will be conducting the patrol “Chopped” competition to close out the meeting year.  They will have to prepare a dinner and dessert, and will be judged by the senior patrol.

The First Year Scouts will continue with advancement requirements for Scout and Tenderfoot.

Windy Hill Conditioning Hike June 5 (Philmont Crews only!)

The final Philmont conditioning hike will be this Sunday, June 5, at Windy Hill Preserve.  This hike is required for any Philmont scout that did not attend all three overnight trips.  Otherwise it is not required, but is still highly recommended.   This is a day hike,  not an overnight camping trip, but scouts are still required to bring a completely packed backpack.

Please sign up for this hike on the activities page, and turn in your signed consent form to Caroline Tice (the activity coordinator) at Tuesday's meeting.

Swim Qualifications/testing will be Sunday June 5 from 9am until 11am.

All first year scouts should attend as well as any scout that has not finished all of their swim requirements for the 2nd and first class rank.

Sign up NOW here.

Questions can be directed to SMIC: or Activity Coordinator: Alfred Chin

Please consider donating to the Friends of Scouting Campaign

Elaine Blasing

It is still the “Friends of Scouting” campaign going on.  This is where we support our local Boy Scout Chapter with a donation to help cover the maintenance associated with Camp Oljato, Camp Cutter, Boulder Creek Scout Reservations and covers the cost of our wonderful Palo Alto and Foster City Council offices.  The council’s budget is about $15.50/month or $185/year per scout.  This campaign is different from our troop dues which were collected in the fall and goes directly to our troop for events, equipment, supplies, badges, etc.

Please don’t forget to give to "Friends of Scouting" at the following website:

Please choose the Stanford District, Troop/Unit #33

Please feel free to mail the checks to me (682 Coral Court, Los Altos, 94024) or sign up on the above website.
