Nov 30: Registration early bird discount ends / Deadline to request BoR Dec 3: STEM Merit Badge Dec 6: Jump Sky High Dec 10: Salvation Army Service Project Dec 13: BoR Scoutmaster Update Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast Saturday, 11 Scouts and seven adults beat the rain storm and collected food for the Scouting-for-Food event. Overall, the District increased the collection this year by 14% over last year with 34,000 pounds that equates to 24,000 meals for families in need. Troop 33 contributed 1,641 pounds of food towards this goal. Thank you Scouts and parents for helping in this worthwhile and needed cause. Thanks also to Peter Monaco, Scoutmaster-in-Charge, and Elaine Blasing, Activity Coordinator, for setting up and running this event! Friday through Sunday, eight Scouts and four adults backpacked into Pescadero Creek County Park. WE hiked in four miles to the Shaw Flat Trail Camp, set up our campsites and settled into our dinners. It was a late night, but we were rewarded waking up to the rain storm. After breakfast, we hiked seven miles to the vista point and Sierra Club Hiker’s Hut (over 1000 feet elevation gain) for lunch and then the return loop. It rained heavily and was coming in horizontally at the peak, but the Scouts had a great time and a tremendous hike. Coming back out on Sunday was still wet and rainy, but not nearly as bad. This was the first time backpacking for seven of the Scouts, and they were real troopers the whole weekend. Major thanks to Katie Jones for the coordination and getting the permits as the Activity Coordinator, and Brett Pauly, Scoutmaster-in-Charge, and Kyler Blasing, Scout-in-Charge. This would not have been as great an outing without your guidance, support and leadership. Also, thanks to Alan Cyron and Nadim Maluf for going and providing energy, support and guidance. Be sure to pay attention to the Troop 33 web site Calendar and Activity pages for upcoming events. Many activities in November and December are already open for information and signing up. These two pages are to help you arrange Scout events with school, sport and family events. Everything we do is posted so you can always know what is going on. This Tuesday Due to the Thanksgiving week and many Scouts out of town for the holiday, Tuesday’s meeting is a movie night. Popcorn and snacks will be provided. There is no uniform requirement – in fact, wear your most comfortable movie watching clothes and bring a mat and pillow to lay on and enjoy the movie. Meeting starts at the regular time. For First Year Scouts and any of last year’s First Year Scouts that still need to complete Trail-to-First-Class requirements, there will be Troop Guides and Scoutmasters available to help with finishing up requirements and to conduct Scoutmaster Conferences at Tuesday’s meeting. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Holiday Wreath Sales open for businessAlan Cyron ajcyron@msn.com Only seven days left to get your Wreath orders in. To date, only 5 Scouts have sold 20 wreaths. A very disappointing number for the work involved to coordinate this activity. Remember, you are selling a high quality wreath that helps fund your Troop activities and earn a major requirement for the Salesmanship merit badge. Details here. Next Board of Review is Tuesday, December 13Mrs. Stanley marilynb@stanford.edu Deadline to request is Wednesday, November 30. Please send me a note if you need to schedule a review or would like to help. Please keep in mind next rank requirements are in place starting January 2017. Additionally, I will need about 20 parent volunteers as I anticipate that we will need to have about 6 panels. Please let me know if you can help on December 13. A call for Den-Chiefs. Nine positions available!
Mr Blasing rblasing@me.com
Scouts, if you've thought of being a Den-Chief, now is best chance to make it happen! Our local cub scout leaders are starting to make their requests. Last year, Troop 33 assigned more than 20 scouts to various local Packs.
If you're not familiar with this Position of Responsibility (PoR), the Den Chief is a significant Leadership position. As Den Chief, you'll be working closely with the local cub scout Dens and Packs, supporting and helping to organize and lead their activities, setting a good example for the younger scouts, and will be an important factor in recruiting new scouts to our Troop.
In general , anyone who meets the following guideline is a candidate for Den Chief:
- A Boy Scout who has been approved by their Scoutmaster to serve as a Den Chief, is 12 years or older, and ideally 1st class rank or higher. Den Chief Training (either on-line, classroom, or preferably both) is required.
The Den Chief assignment is intended to span the entire school year. Please note that we generally restrict Den Chief service to Two Terms, maximum. That gives other scouts an opportunity, and it encourages past Den Chiefs to pursue other PoR positions within the Troop.
We still have several more requests for Den Chiefs than candidates. Our neighboring cub scout Packs continue to reach out to us, because we've built a strong reputation for great Den Chiefs. Let's not let them down! If you still need a PoR, please consider helping out your local cub scouts, but signing up to be a Den Chief!
If you are interested in being a Den Chief this year, please contact Mr. Blasing (either at the Troop meetings or by email: rblasing@me.com), to get the ball rolling. If you were a Den Chief last year, you will need to again receive Scoutmaster approval, and will need to coordinate the assignment through Mr. Blasing.
