Scoutmaster Update

Over the weekend 31 Scouts braved the Zombie Apocalypse at the Cutter Scout Reservation, and survived!  Thanks to John Cummins and Julie Showalter for leading and organizing this event.  It was a lot of fun and the great weather added to the experience.  Also, a big thank you to the parent volunteers that added (and agreed to become Zombies!).  Blair Narog led six Scouts on the Coyote Creek Cycling Classic with three competing the 50-mile, and three completing the 25-mile treks. Congratulations Scouts, and thanks to Blair and Katie Jones for setting this up.

There is still one week left (closing date October 19th) to sign up for Philmont 2016.

Gold Rush Adventure.  Again, still time to sign up for this event.  the Troops within the council that have banded together to set this event up have plenty of similar events to the old Mountain Man Rendezvous to make this an exciting and worthwhile weekend.  plus, this is our opportunity as a Troop to show possible Webelos Cub Scouts have fun Boy Scouting is, and how great our Troop is.  Sign- up at:

If you were elected to the Order of the Arrow last spring and did not attend the required Ordeal last April, you must attend the Ordeal October 24 - 26.  if you are not sure of your status, contact the Troop OA Representative, Ryan Biesty.

Troop 33 is hosting our own Webelo Open House and we expect a good number of potential Cub Scouts to be at Tuesday’s meeting.  The October board of review is Tuesday.  Mrs. Stanley should have contacted you if you are scheduled for the board this week.  The Main Troop will be running a Skills Race, while the First Year Program will going over swim safety, and the working on lashings and related knots.

Gold Rush

This is the last scout meeting before Gold Rush, the replacement activity for Mountain Man.  This is at the same location (Boulder Creek Scout Camp) and same weekend (October 17 to 19) as the Mountain Man. This will be different from previous Mountain Man event, but there will be some of the same activities. There will be panning for gold, there will be candle making and there will be black powder rifles. There are still spots available, so if you would like to go please sign up here.

The AC for this activity, Chris Migdal, will be at the meeting, both before and after to collect the $45 payment, the Activity Consent Form, and the Shooting Waver.

Scout-O orienteering - October 26, 2014 (Signup deadline Oct 16)

Complete you first class orienteering requirement or just have fun orienteering in a competition with scouts from other San Francisco area troops.

The Bay Area Orienteering Club is organizing the 22nd Annual Scout-O, a cross country map and compass adventure designed to test the map reading ability, compass skills and woodsman savvy of any troop. Prizes will be awarded for the best teams and troops, participation patches will be passed out. Details here.

Planet Granite -  Nov 1. Sign Ups Open Now!

Do you like to Climb?Join us at Planet Granite on Saturday Nov. 1st from 9am til Noon. All climbing abilities welcome. We'll receive expert instruction from the staff at Planet Granite. Troop Merit Badge Rally

Only one more week to sign up for our annual Troop 33 Merit Badge Rally!  

Sign up by this Tuesday, Oct. 14, and you can find out your class by the end of this week’s meeting. The rally dates are Oct. 28, Nov. 4 and Nov 11 during our normal troop meeting time.  This year we are offering 7 Eagle-required and 4 elective merit badges.  Please make sure you read the pre-requisites and notes before signing up.  When you sign up, you specify first, second, and third choices, but you will only be taking one merit badge class (one MB class is 3 sessions) The sign-ups will be reviewed by the SMIC, coordinators and counselors, and priority will be given based on: need, rank, age, and date/time.  For the highest chance of getting your first choice, please sign up soon. Scouts will be able to complete their chosen merit badge, IF they:

  • Attend ALL class sessions (no make-ups planned right now, though we are aware there are Scouts who will miss one week because of school trips)

  • Complete ALL pre-requisites and bring to first class session

  • Complete ALL required homework

  • Get a signed blue card before class starts

  • Get a copy of the merit badge booklet (from Scout store or Troop Librarian)

  • Print out and bring the merit badge workbook from

  • Be an active participant in the class

NOTE: Some badges require work that extends beyond the three week rally.  

November - December Board of Review

To accommodate busy school schedules, holidays and the merit badge rally, the November board of review will be combined with the December Board of Review and is scheduled for Tuesday, December 2.  

The deadline to request a Board of Review is two weeks prior to the review, Tuesday, November 18.  

All BoR requests should come from scouts, and should copy the patrol advisor on the request.  Parents can still request for first years.  

Any parent who has time time or would like to be part of the review board, please send me a note.


Reminder: Activity Coordinator Signups still open

We still need several Activity Coordinators (ACs). Thank you to everyone who has signed up.

Please sign up even if you have never been an AC. We will train you. Link to signups is here or at the top of the activities page.

This is a critical role for our troop to be able to offer as many activities as we do. Plus each family is expected to volunteering two types of roles every year and this role will fulfill one of your volunteer roles for the troop. An AC is required to sign up for one event per year. Also as an AC you or your scout do not need to attend the event. If we do not get an AC for an activity we will need to cancel it.

We have some exciting opportunities for AC coming up that still need assignment:

1. Several activities in the winter and spring.

2. Our large summer trips (e.g. Camp Oljato) need ACs now to start signups and collect money, etc.

Reminder: Den Chiefs needed

Our Den Chief program is off to a great start this year!  13 scouts are currently working towards securing their Den assignments!  However, we continue to get requests for Den Chiefs from several local Packs.  We currently have at least another 3 opportunities, and probably more.   So if you're interested in being a Den Chief this year, please contact Mr. Blasing to get the ball rolling (
