Scoutmaster Update

Chris Webb christopherawebb@comcast

On Sunday, 10 Scouts and 3 adults drove over the hill for an amazing day of muzzeloading rifle shooting at a private range up in the hills above Aptos.  We met up with Venture Crew 568 and Troop 504 at the Corralitos Market and Sausage Company where our Scouts picked up some “snacks” (most ate their sausages right then).  We then drove back into the hills onto a 180-acre property and were hosted by Kirk, Kathy, and Kasey Matthews.  They have a 15-station muzzleloading “course” that meanders up a road with a variety of targets along the way ranging from metal gongs, swinging chains, spoons, metal squirrels, playing cards, and a grand finale.  At the end of the course there is an axe head with a clay target on either side.  Hit the axe, split the bullet, and break both clays!

After a safety course (complete with a test!) we split the Scouts into three groups of 8 each with three adults helping with loading.  Scouts learned a lot about the nostalgia of manually loading a rifle.  Everyone was very safe and had a lot of chances to shoot at all the targets.  Yes, several of our Scouts split a bullet in half to break both clays!

After a quick trip to the sausage market for more sausages and pies (from Gizdich Ranch) we drove home.  What a blast!

A huge thanks to Brent Browning for organizing, running and reporting on this excellent event!

Reminder: A call for Den-Chiefs. Nine positions available!

Mr Blasing rblasing@me.com

Scouts, if you've thought of being a Den-Chief, now is best chance to make it happen!  Our local cub scout leaders are starting to make their requests.  Last year, Troop 33 assigned more than 20 scouts to various local Packs.

If you're not familiar with this Position of Responsibility (PoR), the Den Chief is a significant Leadership position.  As Den Chief, you'll be working closely with the local cub scout Dens and Packs, supporting and helping to organize and lead their activities, setting a good example for the younger scouts, and will be an important factor in recruiting new scouts to our Troop.

In general , anyone who meets the following guideline is a candidate for Den Chief:

- A Boy Scout who has been approved by their Scoutmaster to serve as a Den Chief, is 12 years or older, and ideally 1st class rank or higher.  Den Chief Training (either on-line, classroom, or preferably both) is required.

The Den Chief assignment is intended to span the entire school year.  Please note that we generally restrict Den Chief service to Two Terms, maximum.  That gives other scouts an opportunity, and it encourages past Den Chiefs to pursue other PoR positions within the Troop.

We still have several more requests for Den Chiefs than candidates.  Our neighboring cub scout Packs continue to reach out to us, because we've built a strong reputation for great Den Chiefs.  Let's not let them down!  If you still need a PoR, please consider helping out your local cub scouts, but signing up to be a Den Chief!

If you are interested in being a Den Chief this year, please contact Mr. Blasing (either at the Troop meetings or by email: rblasing@me.com), to get the ball rolling.  If you were a Den Chief last year, you will need to again receive Scoutmaster approval, and will need to coordinate the assignment through Mr. Blasing.
