Scoutmaster Update

Welcome to September!  We are now full swing into the Scouting year, and it started off with Andrew Marcopulos being elected the new Senior Patrol Leader.  He will announce his Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders and staff at Tuesday’s meeting, and then the Troop will complete the Patrol realignment and Patrol Leader elections.  All new SPL, ASPL’s and PL’s are required to attend the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) on Sunday, September 7th, from 1 - 4 pm.

THIS Tuesday


We will swear in the new SPL and ASPL’s, and then Main Troop will complete the patrol realignments and elect new Patrol Leaders.  Then the Main Troop will participate in the Entrepreneur product brainstorming for their Patrol.  First Year’s will be working on lashings.


Looking for Service Hours?  Do you like model trains?

Train Days at the Los Altos History Museum, Saturday and Sunday, September 20th  and 21st.  Scouts can support the event by volunteering for the roll of "conductors" at each of the model train exhibits. This roll consists of greeting visitors as they approach an exhibit, punching their ticket to signify that they had viewed that exhibit, and help direct visitors that may have general event questions.  The Museum needs to fill 6 conductor spots for each of 4 - three hour sessions over 2 days : Saturday, 10am to 1pm, 1pm to 4pm and Sunday 10am to 1pm, 1pm to 4pm.

  • Canoe trip the weekend of Oct 4

  • BAOC Orienteering on Oct 26.

I am also looking for volunteers for two very important ongoing annual AC positions.

1. T33 merit badge rally--Our new Merit badge coordinator, Craig Pampeyan, and current AC, Tacy Witter, will work with the new AC to train for this this year.

2. Christmas wreath sales; this volunteer with work with Alan Cyron to transition this.

AC training is scheduled for September 30th.



Reminder: Merit Badge Midway Opportunity

Troop 2 is hosting its annual Merit Badge Midway on Saturday, October 11 at Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos.  This is an opportunity to earn a merit badge by meeting with qualified instructors and demonstrating the skills acquired in completing the prerequisites.  To sign up, check out their website at Troop2Midway.com.  Please ensure that you complete the prerequisites and get the name and contact information for your counselor.


Reminder: Merit Badge Counselors Needed

Have a skill and a desire to share it?  Troop 33 always has a need for qualified merit badge counselors.  With over 120 different merit badges and several new ones for 2014, we continue to need new counselors.  Specific needs at the moment are for Emergency Preparedness, Environmental Science, Lifesaving, and the new Sustainability Eagle-required merit badges.  To see the complete list of merit badges and their requirements to find ones you can help with, check out the meritbadge.org website.  Merit badge counselor training is held the second Tuesday of each month in Palo Alto and the fourth Thursday in Redwood City — both are listed on the Troop Calendar.  We will also have a training session at one of the Troop 33 meetings in the near future, so stay tuned.  Please contact me (Craig Pampeyan) if you are interested or would like more information on how you can support our scouts.


Reminder: A call for Den-Chiefs!

Scouts, if you've thought of being a Den-Chief, now is best chance to make it happen!  Our local cub scout leaders are starting to make their requests.  Last year, Troop 33 assigned more than 20 scouts to various local Packs.

If you're not familiar with this Position of Responsibility (PoR), the Den Chief is a significant Leadership position.  As Den Chief, you'll be working closely with the local cub scout Dens and Packs, supporting and helping to organize and lead their activities, setting a good example for the younger scouts, and will be an important factor in recruiting new scouts to our Troop.

Who can be a Den Chief?

A Boy Scout who has been approved by their Scoutmaster to serve as a Den Chief, is 12 years or older, and ideally 1st class rank or higher.  Den Chief Training (either on-line, classroom, or preferably both) is required.

The Den Chief assignment is intended to span the entire school year.  Please note that we generally restrict Den Chief service to Two Terms, maximum.  That gives other scouts an opportunity, and it encourages past Den Chiefs to pursue other PoR positions within the Troop.

If you are interested in being a Den Chief this year, please contact Mr. Blasing (either at the Troop meetings or by email: rblasing@me.com), to get the ball rolling.

If you were a Den Chief last year, you will need to again receive Scoutmaster approval, and will need to coordinate the assignment through Mr. Blasing.

Next Board of Review (BoR) will be held Tuesday, September 16.  Sign ups are due by Tuesday, September 9.


Scouts, many of you were busy during the summer completing requirements.  Please take a moment to check your rank achievements. Some of you are very close to your next rank, perhaps missing only your Scoutmaster Conference.  Talk to your Patrol Advisor if you have questions or need help.  See http://troop33.org/leadership for who to contact if you are not certain who your Patrol Advisor is.


I encourage scouts to schedule their own review and contact me directly. However, adults can still schedule a review for Tenderfoot and Second class Scouts.


Additionally, if any parent is interested in helping with the Board of Review, please let me know.  It's a great way to volunteer, and meet other scouts and parents.  And it's fun!
