Miniature Golf Outing this Friday, Sept 7,2018


Join your fellow scouts on a fun outing to Golfland in Sunnyvale! We'll play 18 holes, then have some optional snacks at the snack bar. Departing at 7:00 pm from LAUMC. Cost is only $12. Sign up and bring your AC form on Friday.

Shooting Sports Weekend at Cutter Creek, Sept. 14-16

 

It's the annual Pacsky Shooting Sports Weekend, a weekend packed with shooting sports activities! 

 

Scouts will travel up to Cutter Scout Reservation and camp among the beautiful California redwoods. After attending a mandatory safety briefing Friday evening, they will get a chance to participate in a wide range of shooting sports activities on Saturday and Sunday. All meals will be provided and served at the Harkson Lodge. Some events, like shotgun, may have age or size restrictions which are up to the instructor. See age restrictions here

 

Scouts will be grouped into patrols and rotate through the 8 stations on Saturday. Many stations will be open for free shoot on Sunday.  Experienced instructors will conduct safety briefings, supervise all activities, and provide expert instruction. Cost is $100 per scout. This activity is limited to ten scouts and it is open to second year scouts and older. Sign-ups will open Wed. 8/29 at 8:15 AM to give everyone a fair chance.

 

This is an amazing opportunity to experience a wide variety of shooting sports in a safe and fun outdoor environment!

First Aid Merit Badge Class - October 20 & November 17

Mr. Browning and several other parents are hosting a First Aid Merit Badge class on Saturdays, Oct 20 and Nov 17 from 1-5 pm each day. This class is for scouts that rank First Class or higher and will be limited to 24 scouts. The fee for the course is $20. For more information and to sign up please check the troop activity page.

A Call for Den-Chiefs

Scouts,


If you've thought of being a Den-Chief, now is the best chance to make it happen!  Our local cub scout leaders are starting to make their requests. Last year, Troop 33 assigned over a dozen scouts to various local Packs.


If you are not familiar with this Position of Responsibility (PoR), the Den Chief is a significant Leadership position. As Den Chief, you'll be working closely with the local cub scout Dens and Packs, supporting and helping to organize and lead their activities, setting a good example for the younger scouts, and will be an important factor in recruiting new scouts to our Troop.


In general, anyone who meets the following guidelines is a candidate for Den Chief:

  • A Boy Scout who has been approved by their ScoutMaster to serve as a Den Chief

  • Is 12 years or older

  • Ideally 1st class rank or higher

  • Den Chief Training (either online, classroom, or both) is required.  

  • Classroom training from Pacific Skyline Council is scheduled on September 22nd at the LDS Church in Redwood City from 8 - 12:30 or

  • Online course at  my.scouting.org


The Den Chief assignment is intended to span the entire school year. Please note that we generally restrict Den Chief Services to two terms maximum. That gives other scouts an opportunity, and it encourages past Den Chiefs to pursue other PoR positions within the Troop.


If you are interested in being a Den Chief this year, please contact Mr. Chin (either at the Troop meetings or by email: alfred_chin@hotmail.com), to get the ball rolling. If you were a Den Chief last year, you will need to receive ScoutMaster's approval, and will need to coordinate the assignment through Mr. Chin.


Wreath Credits


There are quite a number of scouts with unused wreath credits. Please remember to use them when signing up for activities. If you are unsure if you still have credits remaining, please contact Judy Bergwerk jbergwerk@gmail.com.


Top 5 merit badges Scouts could earn while completing assignments for school

               

Here’s a word problem to ponder: How can one homework assignment count twice?

Easy. By getting credit for that work at school and in Scouts.

 

Turns out several merit badge requirements align perfectly with schoolwork. And there’s no BSA rule against going for double credit. (Same goes for service projects done at school). The Guide to Advancement says that “counting service hours for school or elsewhere in the community and also for advancement is not considered double counting since the hours are counted only once for advancement purposes.”)

 

Makes that 10-page essay seem a little more palatable, huh?

 

Now that school is back in session, let’s look at the top 5 merit badge Scouts can earn while completing homework, group projects or other school assignments.

Youth Protection Training Updated Training - Due October 1st 2018


By October 1, 2018, all new and currently registered leaders will be required to complete the updated training. The enhanced and updated content will allow leaders and councils to comply with all current legal requirements. While this may be inconvenient for some, it reflects the BSA's commitment to the safety of all youth.

Who is Required to Take Youth Protection Training?

 

- Adults accompanying units on activities who are present at the activity for 72 hours or more, must also take Youth Protection Training. The 72 hours need not be consecutive.

- New leaders are required to take Youth Protection Training prior to completing the registration process.

- Units cannot re-charter unless all unit leaders have completed YPT within two years.

- Adult program participants 18 years or older. Adult program participants (Venturing, Order of the Arrow, Exploring) must complete adult Youth Protection Training before submitting their adult application.

- Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to take the training.

The training certificate will only be available for printing after completing the three required training modules and passing the test which completes the Youth Protection Training. It is available on my.Scouting.org on the Dashboard by clicking the print icon.
