Troop 33 Weekly Blast: September 3, 2019

Sep. 3: Activity Page Hackathon. 7:45pm

Sep. 17: Board of Review

Activity Page Hackathon

When: Tues. Sep. 3rd, 7:45pm - 9:00pm

Where: LAUMC Creekside

We're trying something new this year - We want to get the full year's worth of Activity Pages live on our Web site from the start. This will allow scouts/adults to sign up for activities much earlier, and more importantly, it will help volunteers plan more easily and effectively - especially Activity Coordinators (ACs) and uniformed leaders (ASMs). So we're holding a "full court press" Hackathon on Sept. 3rd during the regular Troops Meeting. We need a lot of adult help on this one-time event!!! This is also a fantastic time for new ACs to learn how to create those web pages and make them live. Please join us and help.  Bring your laptop!

Expense Reimbursements

Our fiscal year closed on August 31, 2019.  All expenses for last year, except those related to the recent Yosemite weekend, must be submitted no later than Friday, September 6th so we can close our books.

Reminder: Board of Review

The next Board of Review is on September 17th, 2019. Scouts wanting a Board of Review should send Mrs. Hongjun Zhu (hongjunz@gmail.com) a note by September 4th. Scouts are encouraged to request their own review. Parent volunteers are needed!  Please email hongjunz@gmail.com if you can help.

This is a great way to volunteer with the troop, as well is a lot of fun. No prior experience needed. Thanks a lot!

TroopMaster Password Resets

Everyone should periodically access TroopMaster to see your own advancement status.  You can do that with TroopMaster. If you haven't accessed it before or cannot remember your password, here are instructions:

  1. Go to https://tmweb.troopmaster.com/Login/Index (bookmark this for future reference)

  2. Click on "Forget your password?"

  3. For your Userid use your 'Firstname.Lastname' (ex: Edward.Jones), but you might need to use the First/Last of your scout.  And it’s probably tied to the email address you used during the initial troop registration when joining the troop (probably your email address).  This step will email you a new (random-generated) password.

  4. Go back to #1 above and log in.

  5. Once in, click on "(My account)" in the upper-right corner and pick a password you'll remember.

A Call for Den-Chiefs

Alfred Chin  alfred_chin@hotmail.com

Scouts,

If you've thought of being a Den-Chief, now is the best chance to make it happen!  Our local cub scout leaders are starting to make their requests. Last year, Troop 33 assigned over a dozen scouts to various local Packs.

If you are not familiar with this Position of Responsibility (PoR), the Den Chief is a significant Leadership position. As Den Chief, you'll be working closely with the local Cub Scout Dens and Packs, supporting and helping to organize and lead their activities, setting a good example for the younger scouts, and you will be an important factor in recruiting new scouts to our Troops.

In general, anyone who meets the following guidelines is a candidate for Den Chief:

  • A Scout who has been approved by their ScoutMaster to serve as a Den Chief

  • Is 12 years or older, and ideally 1st class rank or higher.

  • Online Den Chief Training via my.scouting.org is required

The Den Chief assignment is intended to span the entire school year. Please note that we generally restrict Den Chief Services to two terms, maximum. This gives other scouts an opportunity and it encourages past Den Chiefs to pursue other PoR positions within the Troop.

Here is the link to Troop 33’s page on Den Chiefs with more info on the process for obtaining PoR credit:

If you are interested in being a Den Chief this year, please contact Mr. Chin (either at the Troop meetings or by email: alfred_chin@hotmail.com), to get the ball rolling. If you were a Den Chief last year, you will need to receive ScoutMaster's approval, and will need to coordinate the assignment through Mr. Chin.

2019 JOTA (Jamboree-on-the-Air)

Nico Bremeau is helping Los Altos organize "2019 JOTA" (Jamboree-on-the-Air) October 19, 2019. JOTA uses amateur (HAM) radio to link Scouts and hams from our area, the nation, and the world and enables them to talk with each other. It requires no experience and no travel. This event is for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. In 2017 more than 1.5 million scouts participated from more than 160 countries. We're always looking for scouts and parents with HAM experience who can help with the event. If you don't have any experience, please come to have fun and learn all about it. If you’re interested, please send Nico an email (nicolas@bremeau.net)

PS. Nico is also starting a HAM radio/emergency preparedness club at LAHS this fall.
